Hunger Action Month

September is here and during this month, the Feeding America network of food banks gets together for the Hunger Action Month nationwide. This campaign was designed to inspire communities to raise awareness of hunger in the United States and take action.

According to the Food Bank of the Albemarle, 48 million Americans (including 15 million children) are affected by hunger in the country. These individuals must often choose between paying their bills, buying important supplies such as medicine, and putting food at the table.

The goal of Hunger Action Month is to end these impossible choices. Feeding America has multiple events coming up to increase awareness on this issue, but you can also support your local community not only in September but year-round.

Some of the ways you can help end hunger are:

  • Through donations to local food banks either in person or online
  • Fundraising
  • Volunteering at local events
  • Learning about hunger in your community
  • Advocating for food assistance

The More In My Basket staff is also working for fight hunger in the state of North Carolina through offering application completion assistance to residents who may be eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formally known as food stamps.

We can assist you with an eligibility screening and assistance with your application over the phone. There are multiple ways to contact us; see below. You can also check your eligibility and apply for SNAP benefits through the NC DHHS’ ePass website.

On our FAQ page, we answer some of your questions, but will be more than happy to help you further.

We also offer services in Spanish through: https://es.morefood.org/
