Scams Targeting College SNAP/FNS Recipients

Scams among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) recipients are constantly being monitored. College students who receive FNS benefits should be aware of a current scam targeting them. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service has been made aware of college students being targeted by email with requests that the students send personal information to unknown individuals or organizations. Never send or share personal information such as: social security numbers, bank information, FNS EBT card or PIN number to unknown entities.

If you are not sure about a suspicious request for Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) information, you should contact your local agency.

The boxes below contain examples of actual scam messages sent to students.

To report suspicious activity or FNS fraud, the public is encouraged to make a report to the USDA Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-424-9121 or online here.

To stay on top of potential scams, please visit USDA’s SNAP scam alert webpage at https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/scam-alerts.

If you have any questions, please submit them to the Continuous Quality Improvement Team (CQI) dss.policy.questions@dhhs.nc.gov.
